Adriana Johnson





Adriana Michele Campos Johnson is Associate Professor and Chair of Comparative Literature and Affiliate Faculty in Spanish & Portuguese at UC-Irvine. Her work focuses broadly on media and power in Latin America, with a particular focus on Brazil.. Her first book was Sentencing Canudos: Subalternity in the Backlands of Brazil (2011), and she has another one forthcoming on Visual Infrastructures in Latin America. A new project concerns the sense (a regime of meaning) and sense (a mode of sensory presentation) of different forms of water. Recent publications include "An Excess of Visibility, a Scarcity of Water," (Discourse), "The Impropriety of Pirates" (Matraga), “Off Screen, Unsighted, Unthought” Forma: A Journal of Latin American Criticism & Theory and "Death Automation Language" in The Death Drive (2025), Jeffrey Di Leo and Paul Allen Miller, eds. Bloomsbury.
