Mukul Kumar

Mukul Kumar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Public Policy at UC Irvine and serves on the Faculty Advisory Board of the UCI Labor Center. As a geographer with a background in labor organizing, his research and teaching focuses on the political economy of fossil fuels within the context of neoliberalism and authoritarianism in the US and Asia Pacific. Prior to completing his PhD at UC Berkeley, he served as the first student volunteer and intern at the International Center for Writing and Translation. Kumar's current research investigates the limits and possibilities of divesting from fossil fuels in ways that repair historical injustices. His forthcoming book project, Fossil Fuel Divestment as Method, illustrates how and why movements to divest from fossil fuels must not be severed from land-based struggles for Indigenous sovereignty and environmental justice. Kumar’s research has been featured in a variety of scholarly as well as popular forums, including BBC Radio 4, Antipode, Climate and Development, Economic and Political Weekly, and the Centre Tricontinental.
